Listen... Can You Hear Me Now? Written and Performed by
Gloria Rosen
Show Synopsis: A lifetime of interpreting for her deaf parents led Gloria on a search for her own voice. Gloria wrote this insightful one woman show – “Listen – Can You Hear Me Now?” – based on her own unique experiences as a hearing child being raised within the deaf community. Gloria invites you into her childhood home where ringing telephones and doorbells light up the house; watching TV required feats of concentration; and visits to her parents’ club for the deaf leads to an attempt at identity theft. The show discloses a singular experience not available outside the closed, mysterious world of the deaf. It promises to be controversial, unexpected and surprising – an adventure for all concerned! These recollections are often funny, sometimes frustrating, certainly irreverent, and romantically…well…challenging. And in the end she finds what she was seeking – her own voice. What They're Saying: "Sunday afternoon featured the strongest performances. Gloria Rosen’s “Listen, Can you Hear Me Now?” dealt with the dilemma of a woman whose parents are deaf and rely on their daughter as a “translator.” This story of family conflict was amazingly funny at times and audience members, regardless of their backgrounds, identified with it." - Lynne Bronstein, Santa Monica Mirror
Performances: I am both pleased and honored to have had the opportunity to perform Listen…Can You Hear Me Now? at the Los Angeles Women’s Theater Festival in March 2010 and 2011.
